30 min from Athens is a coastline of coves not many people know about. If you’re taking a ferry to the islands from rafina, it’s a 3 minute drive.

I love when there are steps down to a beach because it usually means there is a cliff involved!

Coming from the states, our beaches are usually flat and long. Small, hidden coves under a cliff wall are now my favorite treat 🤍

Further down this beach is another rocky inlet that I climbed over to find a second small cove. From there we hung out and called our family back home. Of course I found seaglass along the way 🍾

Do you prefer long flat sandy beaches or ones that are more adventurous? Because you’re by the water, there is no wrong answer 🌊

Learn the language. Visit the place. Listen to the people. Grow. 🌍✈️🧳

I always had this weird feeling that I was meant to know another language. I always thought it would be Spanish (I’m half Cuban), but my parents didn’t teach me. In law school, I thought it would be French and I’d move to francophone Africa, but surprise! We moved to Nigeria - not French, and we could get by with just English.

Then surprise again when we learned we’d be moving to Greece and would need to learn Greek first. This language is HARD, but it’s opened doors in my heart I didn’t know existed. Greek lets you explain the world with more colors on the palette. Also the movies are right, Greek is EVERYWHERE.

And I’m so grateful to know enough to have conversations with the kindest people in small villages in places I never knew I would visit.

I never expected life to go this way, and I have no idea what’s next, but if you feel that tug too I hope you listen 🫶

I live for exploring Greek harbors. Nowhere to be, just walking on the docks, watching the fishermen do their thing, seeing a glimpse into the different lives going on all around ✨

…but I also love the mountains. In Greece, they are always nearby. I’ve found the sweetest villages in those mountains, filled with kind faces who work extra hard to bring groceries from far away or just grow it themselves.

It’s so small, you don’t need exact plans.

Instead, wander through the cobble streets, do photography, and climb the stairs to the top of the island for an awesome view down below.

On another day, Hike towards sunset restaurant and just keep going to see the beaches, the coastline, and the villages beyond.

Best restaurants for sunset: sunset, omilos, techne. One night we also bought a bottle of wine from the grocery and enjoyed it on the stone terrace in between these restaurants to watch the sunset on our own 🍾

Did you know US and European daylight savings times are different?

For us in Europe, it’s tomorrow! Why is it a few weeks late from the U.S.?

In 2007, America started DST a few weeks earlier because they saw people were using less energy indoors and spending more time outside and doing activities that supported the economy. Basically, the economy (and my happiness level) benefits from longer days.

As an American abroad, this time change difference means it’s always a fun puzzle determining how many hours apart I am from the U.S. to see if it’s too early to call my family/friends back home. :)

🌊 Be careful to leave *nothing* on the beaches. Not even a straw. Instead, you can stroll the waterline and look for colored seaglass while collecting any plastic you see to throw away.

💸 Tipping a lot isn’t required, but is appreciated! 10% will be a really nice gesture. 20% will have them really appreciating Americans :)

🍾 Greek tavernas usually give you a complimentary ouzo shot or dessert. It’s polite to take a sip or a bite to try it even if it’s not your thing. In Crete, it’s considered rude to turn down these beautiful pieces of hospitality!

Deinfluencing life abroad 🏡

We’ve been REALLY lucky with great neighbors that have felt like family, but sometimes it’s tiring always living in someone else’s space.

Sometimes I just want to be back home, with my yard, a place that’s all my own, where I can be as loud as I want, plant a lemon tree and some geraniums, and do a project in my backyard. Home Depot and a project list sounds great too!

Not to mention our neighbors back home are also so great. They built a bar in their garage and always lure us over for chats with blue moon (my favorite beer) and I bring their son some shark teeth 🥹

Eternally grateful for this life, but there are so many small reasons we also miss home 🏠

Just me? If so that’s okay 🙃

What aisle excites you most: wine, cheese, seafood, eggs, or the foreign candy??

Some things I’ve noticed in groceries *outside* the U.S:
- Less processed & “ready to go” foods
- More “ingredients” so I end up cooking more
- I think the rest of the world doesn’t refrigerate eggs. This is a whole thing to research if it triggers you. I wash my eggs right before using them + my hands really well to prevent salmonella, but you do you!
- Good wine doesn’t have to be expensive!

PS: if I had to choose I’m still choosing Publix every time 🫶

Med winter is softer. A time to slow down and think. I took a break from traveling so much and found the magic around me right at home in Athens.

Being present in our lifestyle is truly difficult as we’re eternally torn between two places with a third always on the horizon. These lessons in finding the joy in the present were exactly what I needed.

And now that we’ve thanked winter, we welcome spring and the chance to bloom again! 🌿

Tell me your plans for spring! I’ll be spending a lot of time working on short films for families and artists and hopefully with my toes in the water 🌊📸

🤍 $3 gyros I can hardly finish
🤍 The best coffee
🤍 Simplest metro I’ve ever used that’s $1
🤍 Walkable downtown with fruit trees on sidewalk
🤍 An entire riviera that no one knows about
🤍 Friendly kitty cats
🤍 Stumbling on ancient ruins on the way to the supermarket

Some of my favorite things to do:

🏛️ Walk around Plaka and monastiraki in the early morning. Find Anafiotika and do photography in the beautiful textured stone alleys

🖼️ Browse through museums. @cycladic_museum and Basil and Elise are recent favorites

🌊 Head to the riviera - always @alkyonides.varkiza for coffee first and then varkiza and lomvarda beaches

The things they don’t tell you when you move to Greece 🐛

All across the Mediterranean there are poisonous caterpillars that come out of pine and other trees in Spring. They eject their hairs when threatened. I have welts all over from them floating around in the air, but they are deadly to dogs that eat them.

We are SOOO careful because they are all over our neighborhood right now! No shoes in the house, paw wash after every walk, etc.

Somehow one still ended up in the house and I found Havana chomping down on it?!

This was the protocol:

Washed her mouth out with water using the shower wand (a lot of European showers have the hand held wand)

Rushed to the vet within a few minutes to get a cortisone shot asap.

I assumed they would charge me an arm and a leg for an emergency visit, but they instead rushed out to the waiting room, gave her the $20 shot, and now we hope it’s all good. 🤞🏼 I really didn’t want to bring her in but it was so quick and easy that I’m really glad I did and will now have less anxiety if it happens again…

Ok back to having a happy Friday & looking forward to a tequila 😅
