Hidden in Plain Sight:
Your Map to Discovering Zagori’s Ancient Bridges
This curated one-day adventure to find Zagori’s ancient stone bridges
will make you feel like you’ve stepped into a fairy tale.
Tucked away in Greece’s rugged mountains, the Zagori region is home to the most stunning stone bridges in the world. Centuries ago, these bridges were the only links between the numerous remote mountain villages and they enabled vital communication and trade. Today, they are beautiful reminders of the region's history and their enchanting, fairy-tale charm has turned them into a delightful scavenger hunt for visitors.
There are nearly 100 stone bridges collected around Zagorohoria (which means “the villages of Zagori” in Greek) and this guide will lead you to the six that are the most prominent and photographic.
The best part is they are extremely accessible and close together! Although the whole area is hikable, we found driving will maximize how many you can see (and your level of excitement to see each one). Amazingly, every bridge has an area right off the side of the road where you can pull over and have less than a 5 minute walk to the bridge. It also didn’t take more than 10 minutes to drive between bridges, and some were only a few minutes apart. You’ll be able to see them all in a couple of hours.
Whether you're a photographer, a history lover, or simply love exploring Greece's hidden gems, this bridge tour will leave you with unforgettable memories!
History & Features
A few hundred years old now, the bridges were built primarily during the Ottoman era by local craftsmen who used limestone and ancient techniques. The stone design and construction is still celebrated because despite their age and mossy overgrowth, you can still walk on them! In fact, I think the moss adds to their appearance because you feel like you’re in a fairy glade or Lord of the Rings movie.
A few more fun facts:
Location: You don’t have to hike from bridge to bridge unless you want to. I was perfectly content driving and was amazed that MANY of these bridges are hiding in plain sight right on the side of the road.
Arched Design: Most Zagori bridges are arched, some featuring a single arch and others multiple arches, depending on the width of the river or gorge they span. It's a fun challenge finding atleast one single, double, and triple arch.
Legendary Craftsmanship: The bridges were built without modern tools, relying solely on traditional techniques and incredible precision.
Naming Tradition: Many bridges are named after their benefactors or the purpose they served. For example, "Kokkori" bridge is named after a local benefactor.
Weather Resistance: Despite their age, many of these bridges have survived harsh winters, floods, and the test of time!
Discovering the Most Famous Bridges in Zagori
I’ll start with the absolute must-see bridges. At the end of this guide, I’ll provide a full list of the bridges arranged in logical travel order on the map.
1. Kokkori (Kokkorou) Bridge
This stunning one-arched bridge is framed by massive, towering rock formations, making it one of the most iconic sights in Zagori! Built in 1750, Kokkori Bridge is a masterpiece of traditional stone craftsmanship, perfectly harmonizing with its dramatic natural surroundings. It’s an ideal spot for photography and a serene reminder of Zagori’s architectural heritage. Fun fact: I visited twice within two weeks and once there was no water underneath (hence the photo with me standing on the rocks) and the second time there was a sparkling river below!
Rating: A must-see, plan to stay for 30 min to 1 hour.
2. Bridge of Plakida (Kalogeriko)
The most recognizable bridge in Zagori, the Bridge of Plakida (also known as Kalogeriko), features three elegant arches. Constructed in 1814, its unique design and curved path make it a standout structure. Located near the village of Kipoi, this bridge is a must-see, offering breathtaking views of the surrounding greenery and the river below.
Rating: A must-see, plan to stay for 30 min to 1 hour.
3. Pitsonis Bridge
Completely immersed in nature by now, Pitsonis Bridge offers a magical escape into the wilderness. This hidden gem is surrounded by lush greenery and features a running stream, making it feel like a scene straight out of a storybook. Its natural setting provides a picturesque and calming experience. I sat here and read a book for an hour not wanting to leave. Because the moss is completely overtaking the stone, this bridge produced some of the best photography.
Rating: A must-see, plan to stay for 30 min.
4. Kapetan Bridge
Kapetan Bridge is a single-arched stone bridge built in 1806, exuding a rustic charm that perfectly complements the pristine Zagori landscape. Spanning a gentle stream, it’s surrounded by dense greenery, offering a peaceful and picturesque retreat. Its timeless design and secluded location make it a favorite among those seeking a quiet connection with nature.
Rating: Worth seeing! You will likely cross this bridge first on your journey, and she’s a nice introduction to bridge hunting. It will only add a 15 minute stop to your journey.
5. Lazaridis Bridge
Tucked just below the village of Kipoi, this charming little bridge is a quaint reminder of Zagori's rich history. From the ordinary bridge entering Kipoi, you should be able to see the bridge a tiny bit from the road into the forest, and if you look close you will see a simple path leading there. Though smaller and less grand than others, Lazaridis Bridge holds its charm with its close proximity to the village. The path is technically part of the famed Epirus hiking trail so we felt very adventurous walking there. If you’re short on time, you can skip this one—but if you pass by, it’s worth a quick look.
Rating: Worth seeing, but okay to skip if you don’t have time. It will only add a 15 minute stop to your journey.
6. Milos Bridge
Nestled in a peaceful setting near an old mill, Milos Bridge is a delightful spot to unwind and enjoy the tranquil Zagori landscape. Its compact design and serene atmosphere make it perfect for a quiet moment in nature.
Rating: Worth seeing, but okay to skip if you don’t have time. It will only add a 15 minute stop to your journey.
Visiting the Bridges in Logical Map Order
This is the order you will actually encounter the bridges. I’ve italicized and starred the three must-sees. I recommend saving all 6 in google maps so you are ready to go!

3. Bridge of Plakida (Kalogeriko)*
4. Lazaridis Bridge

Lunch or Dinner
You’ll end near Kipoi so you can always stop at a casual taverna there. If you have the time, visit the nearby village of Dilofo and have lunch at “Lithos (Taki’s Place).” If you are staying in Vitsa, Sta Riza is one of my favorites.
Good luck adventuring!
I hope you have fun discovering the ancient Zagori bridges that are hidden yet in plain sight! The adventure offers a good glimpse into the past when these vital stone bridges were the only connection between villages.
